Emma Crates

In the last two years I've been working with the Chartered Institute of Building and have researched and written two reports: The Dark Side of Construction (2015) and Building a Fairer System: tackling modern slavery in supply chains. This ongoing initiative has become a personal passion, involving consultation with industry experts, government and a wide range of NGOs. New projects are in the pipeline.

I’m a freelance journalist, editor and copywriter specialising in construction, disruptive technologies and human rights.

It’s a career that has taken me into the most extraordinary spaces and I’ve reported on some of the UK’s most iconic projects, from the tops of skyscrapers to the depths of Crossrail. Specific interests include on-site innovation and supply chain reform.

I tell the stories of organisations at every stage of the building process, explaining how complex projects come together and how technology is transforming the way we live and work. I embrace technical, business and management issues.
