ICE 2000 - 4000 Word Reports for CPR and MPR

DateThursday 3rd July 2008

Date : Thursday 3rd July 2008
Meeting point : Belfast (3rd July 2008)
Email : admin@symmonsmadge.co.uk

The 2000 word experience report and the 4000 word project report (2000 words for IEng) are two vital pieces of evidence in your mission to convince your ICE reviewers that you have met the standards for CEng/IEng. This one-day course will enable you to put these reports into the wider perspective of the reviews themselves, and it will give you guidance on preparing the reports. By the end of the day you will be confident about the standards you need to reach, and you will have a strategy for demonstrating that you have achieved them.

Course Outline:

Session 1 Introduction

Working as a group, we shall identify what the standards are for CEng and IEng, and we shall identify all the evidence that we can marshal to prove your case. We shall consider good practice in report-writing, and you will undertake some exercises to put these principles into practice. Finally in this session, we shall compare the ICE's training objectives with the standards for CEng and IEng, and draw key conclusions.

Session 2 The experience report

We shall use the ICE's guidance to help us to draft appropriate frameworks for our 2000 word experience reports. We shall discuss the best balance between text and supporting documentation in these reports, and we shall share our experiences with one another and identify best practice.

Session 3 The project report

We shall conduct a similar analysis in order to share our strategies for drafting our 4000 word project reports. There will be further individual and group exercises. Exchanging your ideas with others is a powerful means of identifying best practice, and in increasing your own confidence in the quality of what you can produce.

Session 4 Delegates' feedback and review of the day

This is the chance for you to reflect on what has been valuable, and to draw together the key benefits of the day. Delegates will finalise model structures for their reports, and we shall work towards a consensus on the best way forward. Finally, we shall consider the process from the Reviewers' viewpoint. What are the Reviewers looking for? How will they assess your evidence?

Benefits perceived by participants:
  • "A very good insight into the requirements of the ICE CPR".
  • "An increased knowledge of structure and content of reports".
  • "A clear knowledge of what to do".
  • "A valuable response from the tutor on the submitted exercises".
  • "Providing the confidence to write clearly and communicate effectively".

Intended for:

ICE graduates who are preparing for their CPR/IPR. Whether or not you have enjoyed a training agreement, this course will be of value to you. If you have already drafted your reports, you can always improve them. If you are sitting the CPR/IPR for the second time, your experience will be invaluable to your fellow delegates.

Delegates should be familiar with ICE 3001 (Routes to membership) and ICE 3006 (Continuing Professional Development) and bring these documents with them. They should also bring either their Core Objectives (ICE 2011) or their Development Objectives (ICE 3005), whichever they are using. All these documents are available on the ICE website, www.ice.org.uk.
