The course covers the design concepts behind limit state bridge codes, and concentrates on the sections of the codes that cover designing in concrete, -including the essential steps of formulating practical concrete bridge designs. Design loads and load combinations, aspects of Global Analysis, and the design of concrete bridge elements are also covered. Some aspects of the design process affected by the impending implementation of Euro Codes are also addressed.
 
Course Objectives:

At the end of the course, participants should be able to:
·         Identify and quantify bridge loadings from all sources
·         Recognise the concepts behind BS5400
·         Identify the steps to be taken in the conceptual design of a bridge
·         Appreciate the need to design with construction, durability, maintenance and safety in mind
·         Be able to specify joints, waterproofing, bearings and parapets

·         Limit State Codes and Overall Design Concepts for bridges
·         Design loads and load combinations to UK codes
·         Aspects of Global Analysis of Bridges
·         Design of bridge elements in concrete - BS5400 Part 4 and Euro Codes.
·         Bridge furniture (Joints, bearings, waterproofing and parapets)

Civil and structural engineers seeking an introduction to the Bridge Design Codes.
