CIAT's cautious welcome for Building Regulations

The Chartered Institute of Architectural Technologists (CIAT) has welcomed a consultation on the Building Regulations announced by the Communities and Local Government (CLG) department, but has raised concerns that the tendering process may result in ‘fragmentation’.

Following its tireless campaign for the simplification of the Building Regulations and of the process by which they are established, CIAT is pleased that CLG has issued the consultation, which covers five principal areas including modernising inspection and enforcement, and providing alternative routes to compliance.
 
However, the Institute has noted that invitations for tender for the framework of the sixteen separate parts of the Regulations have been issued to a number of commercial organisations. CIAT is concerned that this method may be a challenge to ‘sensible co-ordination’.
 
Consequently, CIAT’s President, Mark Kennett MCIAT and Sunand Prasad, President of RIBA have sent an open letter to CLG in an effort to secure an undertaking that this consultation exercise will be carried out in a ‘holistic’ manner, to the satisfaction of all parties involved.  This joint letter was subsequently supported by the Royal Institution of Chartered Surveyors (RICS).
