Building Control & Standards Scholarship

This relatively new scholarship aims to encourage advancements in the building control profession and the development of Building Regulations. Each year the Faculty of Building Control and Standards, together with the Local Authority Building Control (LABC), award £3000 to the chosen scholar.

The chosen scholar will produce a piece of research at the end of the twelve month period.

Suggested topics could include:

  • The social value of building control and building standards
  • Site management to ensure as-built performance is no worse than that designed
  • How to demonstrate that building control is adding value to the construction process

Key Dates

  • Applications for the Building Control and Standards Scholarship are currently closed pending a review of CIOB’s awards and scholarships.

The Application Process

  • The interested applicant should contact us with their CV and a brief report (approx. 500 words) expressing why they wish to become a scholar and their proposed research topic.
  • If they pass this stage of the process, the candidate will be invited for interview and to present, using a PowerPoint Presentation, on their chosen topic to an invited audience of CIOB and LABC representatives after which one successful scholar will be selected.
  • Throughout the scholarship period the scholar remains in full employment and is paid their normal salary by their employer.
  • Regular review meetings will be held with representatives from each organisation, for which the scholar produces a short progress report. These meetings ensure that the work is on schedule and that the scholar receives any necessary support.
  • At the end of the 12 month scholarship period the scholar must produce a written report of 8,000 – 10,000 words. A rehearsal presentation is then given to a small CIOB/ LABC audience and this is followed by a public presentation, usually at the LABC spring Conference.
  • The research will also be considered for publication to a wider audience reaching directors and senior managers from around the industry
  • To gain maximum benefit from the scholarship process, scholars should ideally have the support of a mentor who will offer guidance and support and attend the review meetings.
