The final stage to gaining Chartered Membership for most candidates is the Professional Review. This will allow you to use the designation MCIOB. The Professional Review checks that you have the right knowledge, skills and experience in three areas of competence: occupational, management and commitment to professionalism.
Applying for the Professional Review
- Step 1: Academic requirements
You need to have met the academic requirements before starting your application. You’ll need to contact us to check.
- Step 2: Membership
You must already be a non-Chartered member of the CIOB. If you aren't a member yet, you will need to register for an online account and then apply for membership. Start the process here.
- Step 3: Download the Professional Review form
See below for more information on which form to download.
- Guidance notes
You’ll need to read the guidance notes that you'll receive with the form, which detail the supporting documents we require with your application, for example, an up-to-date personal CV and maybe a record of your CPD.
Your application will need to be endorsed by your line manager, a client or a construction professional who knows you well. Find out more in the guidance notes you’ll receive with your application.
Which form is for you?
There are three Professional Review forms. The one you’ll need depends on your experience and qualifications. After you’ve contacted us to confirm you can apply, and joined the CIOB as a non-Chartered member, choose the form for you from the options on the right hand side of this page.
- Professional Review for those working in the industry
This is the most common Professional Review form, for all applicants except those with selected Level 7 NVQ Diplomas or those working in the academic field. If you're not sure if you need to complete the Professional Review, click here to find your route to Chartered membership.
- NVQ Professional Review
This is a route with a much shorter form for those with a Pearson Edexcel Level 7 NVQ Diploma in Construction Senior Management or Built Environment Design and Consultancy Practice. If you have a different NVQ or other qualification you’ll need to fill in the Industry route form.
- Professional Review for academics
This tailored route is suitable if you are a teacher, lecturer or researcher, and you do not have direct experience of working on site, or have not worked on site for a while. Read more here about the Academic route.
