Faculty of Building Control and Standards
Overview
Comment from the Chair…………
It is fast approaching 3 years since the Building Control and Standards Faculty was formed and at a recent meeting of Board members, the opportunity was taken to reflect on successes to date and to look at future areas of work.
Interest in Board membership since the launch, has certainly increased and now the Faculty is fully represented with new member Michael Wadwood being welcomed to his first meeting.
The main areas of discussion centred on training, education and promotion of Building Control Standards. With revisions to Building Regulations Parts F (ventilation), J (heat producing appliances) and L (thermal insulation of buildings) due on 1st October 2010, the Faculty has a role to play in highlighting the pending changes to CIOB regions and already five presentations have been booked.
CIAT have also enquired about similar presentations to their members and discussions are underway to establish how such training can be delivered by Faculty members.
If any other regions require a presentation on the proposed changes to Building Regulations they should contact Veronica Dunn at Englemere to enable a date to be booked.
Participation of the Faculty in some form of an awards ceremony has been discussed on many occasions over the past few years and it is hoped that over the next 12 months, this vision will become reality. It is felt that recognition of individuals and the work of public and private sector building control bodies that have contributed to the application of Building Standards in the built environment, would promote the role of the Building Control Surveyor within all areas of the construction industry.
The Faculty has agreed to set up a working group to explore how involvement with such awards can be taken forward.
Building Control scholarships was also discussed and members considered this could encourage students to enter the building control profession, whilst at the same time, promoting the role of the Faculty and membership of CIOB.
Discussions have already been held with organisations that may be willing to provide some sponsorship for scholarships and further talks will now be held with Dr Sarah Peace at the CIOB, to take this matter forward.
Our involvement on the Building Control Alliance remains high on our agenda, particularly as CIOB are due to take over the role of Chair in 2011 and the Faculty is keen to ensure that this body continues as a model for professional inter-action and promotes the role of the building control profession across the construction industry.

Overall, it will be a busy period for the Building Control and Standards Faculty and I am sure one where CIOB members will continue to be informed of the role building control bodies and professionals play, in improving the built environment.
