Professional Development Programme

The Professional Development Programme (PDP) is available for graduates or students who do not possess the required experience within the industry but want to progress to Chartered Membership via a structured and assessed route. The PDP helps to develop and assess candidates' occupational competence within a framework of support from their employer and a CIOB approved assessor.

Employers can benefit in a number of ways from supporting their employees in the PDP. Their graduates will be better qualified and more experienced, with increased job satisfaction and an active, positive attitude towards career management.

It usually takes between one and three years to complete the programme, however it will depend on your circumstances and employer.. During that time candidates will assemble a portfolio of work to show they meet certain key competencies across 12 specific units. All work is submitted online using a system that allows you to track your progress. The units you will work towards include: project planning, managing health, and safety and welfare in the workplace.

To register for the PDP, you will need to have a qualifying university degree – which may or may not be accredited by the CIOB and may or may not be in a construction-related profession. You also need to be working in a suitable role, such as a junior management position within the built environment or construction industry. Upon successful completion of the programme you will be able to progress to full Chartered Member status and use the designation of MCIOB.
