One of the traits that initially attracted me to consider CIOB membership was that entry could be based on more than just academia. My qualifications, until the past few years, were simply based on carpentry and site management safety training scheme courses. However, I had a wealth of experience and because of this, I was able to enrol on the Chartered Membership Programme. 

This is a qualification in itself, with membership being the equivalent of a bachelor’s degree. It is not easy, especially working full time and parenting too, but because it is worth it, you make it happen and put in the hours. The open book exams soon come along and it’s crunch-time. It is a lot of work, especially if, like me, you want distinctions. That is not the end of the work, as the professional review in itself is a commitment, but when you pass that, you receive the coveted email of congratulations and confirmation of your official status as Chartered Construction Manager or Builder, not to mention those prized post-nominals! For me, that was something I never believed I would achieve.

Two months later, you’ve updated your email signature, your business cards, your LinkedIn profile and received an ornate level of praise for your achievement. This is notification to your professional peers that you are committed to an ethos and continued professional development - you are among the industry leaders and professionals and can show that you have a level of knowledge earned through experience, hard work and study. Now a celebration is in order and you have the option to register and attend a graduation ceremony. 

Is it worth the small fee and the hire of a gown? A day out the office is always appealing but you’ve had a huge amount of congratulatory messages and it is understandable that you may feel you’re “milking it” slightly, but I say that it is worth it and it is a wonderful, celebratory occasion.

I can wholeheartedly say that the event is more than just a graduation. The CIOB throw an affair where your achievement is not only recognised but truly celebrated. Every single detail of the day is meticulously planned and executed with almost flawless systemisation, without being robotic. There is nothing quite like a room of people applauding you as you are handed your certificate, draped in a gown, demonstrating perfectly your achievement. Your guests are just as welcome as you are and are made to feel so. Pride in your achievement is a feeling to relish and the CIOB executes the day to make you the focal point. I’ll also make the point that as a builder, the buffet is not to be turned away from!

The event is grand, the surroundings are stunning, the decorum, the dress, how you are addressed and the organisation of the event is spectacular. There really is, in my humble opinion, no better way to celebrate your achievement than the graduation ceremony.

I am now looking to the future and will consider going for Fellowship at some point.
