Professional Review

Our Professional Review mentoring programme is available to CIOB members looking to complete their Professional Review application. Find out more about the CIOB Mentoring Service here.

How to apply for the Professional Review

  • Academic requirements and experience requirements:

You will need to have met the academic eligibility requirements, along with a minimum of 3 years of relevant experience (5 years if your qualification is not in the built environment or is a non-honours degree) before starting your application. You will need to hold a Level 6 (degree) level qualification or higher to be academically eligible.

  • Membership:

You must already be a non-chartered member (Applicant) of the CIOB. If you aren't an Applicant member yet, you will need to register for an online account and then apply for membership. Start the process here.

  • Download the Professional Review form:

See below for more information on which form to download.

  • Guidance notes:

You’ll need to read the guidance notes that you will receive with the application form, which will detail the supporting documents that you will be required to submit along with your application. For example, you may submit an up-to-date copy of your CV and a current record of your CPD.

  • Verification:

Your application will need to be endorsed by your line manager, a client or a construction professional who knows you well. You can find out more in the guidance notes you’ll receive with your application.

Professional Review Top 10 Tips

The final stage to gaining Chartered Membership for most candidates is the Professional Review. The Professional Review assesses that you have the right knowledge, skills and experience in the three main areas of competence: occupational, management and professionalism. Here are our top tips.

Which form is for you?

There are three Professional Review forms. The one you’ll need depends on your experience and qualifications. After you have joined the CIOB at Applicant grade, you can choose the form for you from the options below on this page.

The Application Form is a PDF document – please ensure that you use an official programme such as Adobe Reader to complete the application form, so that you can save the information that you are inputting into the document.

Please do not use a browser to complete your application, as this may result in the information you have entered being lost. We recommend downloading the document and then opening it with a PDF reader – we recommend using Adobe Reader, which is free to download from www.adobe.com

Please email your application to [email protected]

    Professional Review (PR) FAQs

Professional Review for those working in the industry

This is the most common Professional Review form, for all applicants except those with selected Level 7 NVQ Diplomas or those working in the academic field.

    NVQ Professional Review

This is a route with a much shorter form for those with NVQ 7 or SVQ 11. If you have a different NVQ or other qualification you’ll need to fill in the Industry route form. To be eligible to undertake the NVQ route, you must meet both of the following conditions: - Your NVQ is less than 3 years old - Your NVQ assessor was a Chartered Member of the CIOB at the time of your assessment If both of these conditions are not met, then please complete the Industry Professional Review.

    Professional Review for academics

This tailored route is suitable if you are a teacher, lecturer or researcher, and you do not have direct experience of working on site, or have not worked on site for a while. Read more here about the Academic route.
