Frequently Asked Questions
If you wish to proceed with your application, please apply via our online application form, which can be found via the following link: www.ciob.org/become-a-member/how-join
You will need to click on ‘Check your eligibility to join’ which will lead you onto the online application process.
If your award is accredited or recognised by us, the process normally takes five to ten working days. If your award is not CIOB accredited the process can take two to three weeks.
We recognise that there are many people in the sector who have gained the relevant knowledge and management skills for CIOB membership, without full academic qualifications. If you fall into this category, you can instead follow a structured programme designed to help experienced construction professionals demonstrate their competence in order to gain full Chartered status. The programme combines elements of study too, to help candidates develop a strong understanding of the principles of construction management. For more information, click here.
If you have a qualification that is not accredited or recognised by the CIOB, you can ask for it to be individually assessed by us. The assessment will determine what academic recognition and level of membership we can offer you. Please click here.
Like most professional bodies, we believe it’s essential for members to keep up to date with the latest developments and knowledge in their field, this is called Continuing Professional Development. However, we’re not prescriptive about how the candidate should do that. We think members are in the best position to know how best to brush up their skills. With regards to applicants for chartered membership, you would need to show proof of CPD from the past twelve months, and a plan for the next year as well. Please click here for more information on CPD.
Provided you are a current member, you are able to use the following post nominals:
Fellow FCIOB
Member MCIOB
Those with either a student membership or with Applicant or Student status are not able to use a post nominal after their name until they upgrade their membership to MCIOB.
Provided you meet our educational requirements and have the minimum of three years professional experience (five years if you hold a non-honours degree or equivalent) you can complete the Professional Review to gain full Chartered membership. Find your route to Chartered membership here.
As part of the online application process you will be prompted to upload your CV and awards. There is no need to send these separately to us.
The rules now state that any member who allows their membership to lapse will be required to join as a brand new member. This means that you need to start the application process by reapplying via our online application form. Accordingly lapsed MCIOB and FCIOB chartered members will be required to re-join as a non-Chartered member and will then need to successfully complete the Professional Review process before being able to use the ‘Chartered Construction Manager’ designation again.
Details for this application can be found on the following link at the bottom of the page: www.ciob.org/become-a-member/how-join The online application form will guide you through the process.
The EPA has now been replaced by the Chartered Membership Programme (CMP). You can find more information about the CMP here: www.ciob.org/Your-Career/chartered-membership-programme
