Abstract of Report
This research examined the impact behaviours can play within the areas of conflict and dispute. Conflict and dispute are often viewed from the perspective of duration and cost however the behavioural aspect of conflict management has been neglected. The principal findings show that behaviour is influential in relation to conflicts and disputes within the construction industry. SMEs were found to be more adversarial than large companies and draconian clauses were cited as encouraging negative behaviours. For too long the industry has failed to acknowledge the significance of behaviour in project success and it is imperative the influence individuals can have is recognised.
The Sir Ian Dixon Scholarship offered the chance to gain exposure to new environments, interesting people and to be mentored by leading industry figures which was in my opinion the greatest benefit of what was a fantastic opportunity. I was able to develop my research capabilities, presentation skills and time management in addition to a number of other areas. The scholarship is well recognised and highly regarded within the industry and I would recommend to anyone with a desire to boost their career and a passion for the industry to apply.
