Encon Construction Limited is an award-winning building and civil engineering contractor. Founded in 2003 the business has developed across a wide range of clients, in both the public and private sector in England and Wales. The company has Civil Engineering and Building divisions managed by senior personnel, who have all held senior positions in major construction and civil engineering companies in the UK. We have wide ranging experience across both building and civil engineering sectors. Our Building Division undertake projects in residential construction, health and social care, community facilities, retail, education and commercial building; whilst our civil engineering division undertake civils infrastructure, industrial, waste to energy, airports and environmental enhancements. We are particularly successful where we can apply our civil engineering skills to building projects with difficult or technically complicated ground conditions or substructures.

Avonmouth Terminal Refurbishment Client: Yara UK The terminal comprises of two large storage buildings which were built in the 1970s, one is 80m x 100m and the other 100m x 180m, both are multi-span propped portals. The buildings were cladded in asbestos cement, with an asbestos fire wall on a boundary with an adjacent site, had roller shutter and personnel doors and generally were in a poor state of repair. Encon’s scope of work was to remove all asbestos material, renew roof purlins and side rails and to re-clad both buildings with a single skin box profile sheet. All existing timber personnel doors were replaced with steel doors with vision panels and roller shutter doors replaced with a combination of fast acting and roller shutters. A new mechanical and electrical installation was provided in both buildings with aspirating fire detection due to the dusty nature of the Client’s operation. A new concrete floor slab was installed in one half of the larger building with 620 3m high pre cast concrete walls to form material bins for bulk storage. The internal columns in the bulk storage area were found to be severely corroded and the bottom 2m of all 28 required replacing, this proved to be a challenging engineering process as the building required propping in order to carry the renewal. Externally, new surfacing was laid and services and concrete slabs provided for pre-fabricated offices and welfare units. The refurbishment of the buildings was executed consecutively and daily liaison was essential as the Client operation could not be stopped completely.

Tremorfa Food Waste Anaerobic Digestion Plant, Cardiff Client: Kelda This project was for the Design and Construction of a 35,000t per annum Anaerobic Digestion Facility on a Brownfield site in Cardiff as Principal Contractor. The project consisted of New Access Roads, Car Parking, Reception Building, Tank Farm and a Bunded enclosure. There were many challenges on the project, such as Design & Build, CIRIA Guidelines and contaminated land, to name only a few. The project involved re-designed layout and new access roads and improvement of the existing Tidefields Rd, under a Section 278 Agreement and S104 agreement, along with all Car Parking Facilities. The existing road had suffered from considerable differential movement, and close liaison with Cardiff CC Highways Department was required to upgrade an access road for local authority adoption. Through the design development process close liaison with the Cardiff Planning Authority was required to ensure proposed changes were acceptable to the authority, prior to fully worked up design and submission of planning amendments. There was a Contractual requirement to achieve CEEQUAL Very Good. The project faced several environmental and ecological issues, including site contaminated with asbestos knotweed and Oystercatchers - bird nesting survey was carried out with indigenous plant landscaping. Early collaboration with the client, processing contractor and designers, resulted in construction solutions and value engineering options for a complex engineering scheme.

Lawns Industrial Estate Client: Caerphilly County Borough Council The construction high quality light industrial units at Lawns Industrial Estate, Rhymney, on behalf of Caerphilly County Borough Council. The development of 3 new buildings of 15 individual units, along with the associated site infrastructure and landscaping. Alongside Encon and our client, Caerphilly County Borough Council, the scheme was developed in partnership with AECOM, Hatcher Prichard, CD Grey & Associates and Hicks Titley Partnership. The main works comprise of 999 sq. m of floor space split into three industrial buildings. Each of the three buildings contain five starter units of between 50 and 100 sqm. The scheme includes a small common services room, external vehicle access and car parking and external, landscaping works. The site hosted a number of existing units and saw transformation of underutilised land in Rhymney into high quality, light industrial factory units as part of the investment in infrastructure in the South East Wales region. The scheme not only enhances the local economy but provided much needed employment opportunities for the local community of Rhymney and the surrounding wider community.
