A responsible approach to AI at CIOB

Artificial intelligence is developing quickly, and like many organisations we are thinking carefully about where it can add value, where caution is needed and how we make sure its use reflects the standards we expect of ourselves. The CIOB’s approach is deliberately measured.

We see AI as an important organisational enabler, but not as an end in itself. The question for us is not simply where AI can be used, but where it can genuinely improve the experience of our members, support our people, strengthen our services and help us make better decisions.

That thinking sits at the heart of our AI Vision and Strategy, which was approved by the Board of Trustees earlier this year.

The strategy sets out a number of principles that will guide how we adopt and use AI. These include transparency, accountability, fairness, privacy, security and sustainability. Just as importantly, it makes clear that human judgement remains central to how CIOB operates. AI may support decisions, improve insight or automate repetitive activity, but responsibility and accountability remain with our people.

For members, the potential benefits are practical. AI could help us provide more relevant guidance, improve how people find learning and support, make our services more responsive and help us better understand what our members need at different stages of their professional journey.

Internally, there are opportunities too. We want to reduce unnecessary administration, improve access to information and give our colleagues more time to focus on work that benefits members and the wider profession. But we also recognise that effective use of AI depends on confidence, skills and good governance, not simply access to new technology.

That is why our approach includes clear governance, approval processes and ongoing scrutiny. We are developing a formal AI Governance Framework, a roadmap for adoption and a central register of AI systems and use cases. This will help ensure that experimentation and innovation happen within clear boundaries and with appropriate oversight.

This is also an evolving area. Technology, regulation and expectations around AI will continue to change, and our own approach will develop with them. Our intention is to remain open to the opportunities AI creates while being equally clear about the responsibilities that come with using it.

For anyone who would like to explore our approach in more detail, our full CIOB Artificial Intelligence Vision and Strategy is available to read alongside this blog.
