What does APEL mean for me?

Recently we launched a new route to becoming chartered – ‘APEL’. This stands for Accreditation of Prior Experiential Learning. What this means is that members in the ACIOB and ICIOB grades who do not currently hold a level 6 (degree level) qualification, but have substantial management experience in construction, can have an alternative route to become chartered.

It’s nothing new – it’s a well-established process for assessing experiential learning for access to further education or progression, often used in Higher Education. It assesses how your prior learning and experience meets the academic requirements of membership, allowing the applicant to progress to the Professional Review.

This new route won’t affect any others – it’s simply a different way to go about obtaining chartered status if you’ve focused your career on experience. It’s a time-limited offer, so it won’t be around forever, but we’re hoping that this extra step will open up more opportunities for construction professionals to get chartered.

The process will close in March 2024. ACIOB and ICIOB grades will close in June 2025. Our customer services team can help you find out if you are eligible. The offer is only available to Associate or Incorporated members who hold current membership.
