Summary

Join us for a site visit to the Grade II* listed Kings Theatre, Southsea, as work progresses on the 1907 Elevation regeneration project.

Please note: this event is for over 18’s only.

Named after the year the theatre opened, 1907 Elevation is a major heritage-led regeneration scheme that will restore and revitalise the theatre's Albert Road frontage while safeguarding one of Portsmouth's most iconic cultural buildings for future generations. The project will transform a long-derelict Victorian terrace into a new accessible entrance foyer, community and rehearsal spaces, and improved visitor facilities, whilst carefully preserving the building's historic character and Frank Matcham's original vision.

With construction now well underway, this visit offers a unique opportunity to see conservation engineering and façade retention techniques being delivered on a significant heritage project.

Key Elements of the Site Visit

Attendees will have the opportunity to view and discuss:

  • Temporary façade retention works and the engineering challenges involved in preserving the historic structure.
  • Completed underpinning works, including the methodology adopted and lessons learned.
  • Replacement façade piers, currently being constructed as part of the restoration programme.
  • Permanent façade retention solutions and how they integrate with the new structure behind the retained Victorian frontage.
  • The challenges of delivering structural interventions within a live heritage environment.
  • Collaboration between engineers, conservation specialists and the wider project team.
