To apply, you must:
Hold full Chartered Membership of CIOB (MCIOB or FCIOB) and have at least 2 years’ practical experience performing duties equivalent to a Building Surveyor.
You must also demonstrate experience across at least 3 core areas, such as:
- Construction technology / building pathology
- Building surveys / condition reporting
- Planning or building regulations
And 1 additional area, such as:
- Design/specifications
- Project management
- Health & safety
- Sustainability or other specialist fields
The assessment fee is £100.
Step 1 – Contact Us
Email [email protected]. You will be sent the forms and instructions to kickstart the process.
Step 2 – Portfolio Submission
Submit a competency-based portfolio including:
- Completed portfolio document (Sections A001–A007)
- Supporting evidence (e.g. condition survey report)
- CV (focused on building surveying experience)
- Complaints procedure
- Terms of engagement
- Professional Indemnity (PI) insurance
Step 3 – Assessment
- Your application is reviewed by a CIOB-appointed assessor
- You may be asked for clarification (not always iterative)
Step 4 – Outcome
- Pass: Receive official confirmation letter from CIOB
- Fail: Feedback provided; appeal possible within 28 days (process-based only)
Step 5 – Register with the Registration Body
Apply via the official Registration Body website by submitting:
- CIOB membership certificate
- CIOB approval letter
- Employment and project history
- Eligibility to register your professional title under the law
- Formal recognition as a Building Surveyor
- Enhanced professional credibility
- Improved career opportunities in construction and property sectors
