Requirements

Becoming Chartered generally requires 3-5 years’ experience and a degree-level qualification. As there is no single career path into construction, we have created alternative pathways to recognise different combinations of educational achievement and industry experience.

You will need to complete an assessed report designed to evaluate candidates' knowledge, experience, and competence in the field of construction management.

Routes to Membership

There are several routes to becoming an MCIOB depending on your qualifications and experience — all leading to the same professional recognition. Depending on your current level of experience, you could be a member within as little as three months.

Qualified & Experienced Practitioner - Industry Pathway

Skills Development Pathway

Suitable for graduates or students who do not yet possess the required 3-5 years’ experience within the industry but want to progress to Chartered Membership via a structured and assessed route. With support from your employer, you will be enrolled in the Professional Development Programme (PDP), allowing you to provide evidence and be assessed based on your learning while you work. You will pay a reduced membership rate while gaining the qualification.

Self-Development Pathway

Suitable for candidates with a bachelor’s degree who lack the required industry experience (3 years if you have a construction-related degree and 5 years if your degree is in another subject) to become Chartered. This pathway will give you immediate access to membership benefits as you gain the required knowledge and experiences to put you ahead of the game as you get ready to become Chartered.

Chartered Membership for Academics

Experienced Practitioner Pathway

This pathway supports practitioners in the construction industry without a degree-level qualification, who wish to achieve Chartership. Through this pathway, you will complete the Chartered Membership Programme (CMP), a programme consisting of four modules designed to give you the specialist knowledge and skills required to manage construction projects effectively. This will be followed by the chartership assessment.

Qualified & Experienced Practitioner - N/SVQ Pathway

This pathway was created to streamline the process for members who are ready to achieve Chartered Membership (MCIOB). To be eligible for this pathway, applicants must meet all of the following requirements:

● Have a minimum of three years’ construction management experience.

● Hold a Level 7 NVQ Diploma in Construction Senior Management, or SVQ at SCQF Level 11 in Construction Senior Management.

● The above qualification must have been awarded within the last three years.

● The above qualification must also have been assessed by an assessor who was a CIOB member (MCIOB or FCIOB) at the time of assessment

Professional Review

Most candidates must complete an assessment, known as a Professional Review (PR), as the final step to becoming a Chartered Member. The PR assesses a candidate’s knowledge, experience, and competence in construction management.

Academic pathway

Academics with more than three years of experience researching or teaching a construction-related subject at Level 4 or above, could be eligible for Chartered Membership. Academics are also eligible for a 50% discount.
