The Chartered Institute of Building (CIOB) is partnering with content creators, Content With Purpose (CWP), to produce a film series exploring how decisions made by built environment professionals today will shape the resilience, sustainability and performance of the world for decades to come.

Inspired by the priorities of CIOB President Professor Saul Humphrey’s year in office, Building for Tomorrow will explore the idea of tipping points in the built environment - moments where growing environmental pressures, changing expectations and new ways of working are driving industry transformation.

Through cinematic storytelling, expert insight and real-world case studies, the solutions-focused film series will spotlight the people, projects, organisations and partnerships putting ideas into practice. It will showcase progress on the ground - from high-quality retrofit that extends the life of existing buildings and renewable energy, to circular approaches to materials, biodiversity net gain, nutrient neutrality and nature-positive development.

Building for Tomorrow will bring together a breadth of international perspectives from across the built environment, featuring professionals across roles, disciplines and career stages. It will explore how better decision-making, innovation, collaboration and professional leadership can help address shared challenges. From construction, design and engineering to sustainability, technology, manufacturing, research, education and the wider supply chain, the series will demonstrate the many different ways organisations across the built environment can contribute to positive change.

Amanda Williams, Head of environmental sustainability at CIOB, said: “The built environment has a profound relationship with both climate and nature, and the choices our profession makes today will have consequences for generations to come. We already have many of the solutions we need, but the challenge is turning good practice into established practice at the scale required.

"Through Building for Tomorrow, we want to showcase what progress looks like in practice, share learning from across our international community and demonstrate how the profession can respond to these interconnected challenges in a practical, positive and sustained way.” Building on the success of The Nature of Building (2024), the previous digital series created by CIOB and CWP, Building for Tomorrow will continue the partnership’s exploration of the relationship between construction, sustainability and the natural world.

Max Smith, Founder and Managing Director of CWP, said: “We believe storytelling can be a powerful catalyst for change. The built environment is facing complex and interconnected challenges, but there are also extraordinary people and organisations developing solutions, challenging established ways of working and demonstrating what progress can look like. Through Building for Tomorrow, we want to bring this work to a global audience - making complex ideas accessible, sharing knowledge across the profession and inspiring others to consider what is possible.”

Building for Tomorrow will launch on World Environment Day, 5 June 2027.

The built environment has a profound relationship with both climate and nature, and the choices our profession makes today will have consequences for generations to come.
