Eye on the prize: Construction photograph towers over the competition to win prestigious title

After a record 5,000 votes were cast online, the winner of this year’s Art of Building photography competition has been announced as Mehmet Yasa, a professional photographer from Turkey, for his stunning photograph Eye of the Tower.

After a record 5,000 votes were cast online, the winner of this year’s Art of Building photography competition has been announced as Mehmet Yasa, a professional photographer from Turkey, for his stunning photograph Eye of the Tower.  

Mehmet’s image, captured in Verona, Italy, received an incredible 72% of the votes from across the world to secure the prestigious title of Art of Building Photographer of the Year. 

"Winning this title and having so many people vote for me is an incredible experience. I am also honored to be the first Turkish photographer to win this award. This competition is truly inspirational and makes me want to continue finding new and creative ways to take photos of the buildings around us. I would like to thank everyone who voted for my picture and congratulate all the other finalists.” said Mehmet.

Now in its ninth year, the Art of Building competition from the Chartered Institute of Building aims to showcase the creativity and beauty in the built environment. Thousands of amateur and professional photographers from across the globe are encouraged to enter each year for the chance to win the title and a £3,500 cash prize.

“Each year we are overwhelmed by the high level of entries from across the world that capture the imagination of our industry” said judge Rebecca Thompson CIOB President, “Mehmet’s photograph is an outstanding contribution that perfectly demonstrates the creativity of construction. It reflects how different perspectives can influence our perception of the buildings surrounding us.”
