In our previous blog , we discussed the challenge in ascertaining a true picture of the number of victims of modern slavery in the UK and the importance of businesses’ recognising it as an issue, in order for them to be able to mitigate that risk.
In 2018, just under 7,000 individuals were identified as potential victims of Modern Slavery and referred into the government’s National Referral Mechanism (NRM) – a 300% rise since 2013. However, there is a consensus that these statistics do not reflect the true picture of Modern Slavery in the UK. The National Crime Agency (NCA) has previously suggested that this is the ‘tip of the iceberg’.
