Celebrating and Supporting our Student Members

The Education Team have been working very hard on our Student Festival, which is to be held on 7 and 8 April and we are very excited about this. Since our last update, the Education Team have been working very hard on our Student Festival, which is to be held on 7 and 8 April and we are very excited about this. The student experience is more important than ever and with COVID-19 restrictions still in place, we understand how challenging it is to give students that full university experience. We hear from many students who have been severely impacted by the lockdown, not just in their education and studies but in their finances, social activities and access to construction sites and that is why this event is so important. It is a celebration of student members designed to provide opportunities, connections and support.

The Student Festival is an international event featuring key leaders in the construction industry including CIOB president Mark Beard, past president Paul Nash and future president Michael Yam. Students can learn about career options and routes to membership, network with international colleagues and develop professional relationships. I would encourage you to promote this to your students. You can find more information in Hassana Ahmed’s blog or at this link CIOB Student Festival.

We also recognise that much of our efforts these days go into pastoral care for staff, colleagues and learners. It’s vital that members are given the tools and support mechanisms to help them through these difficult times. That is why we have teamed up with Anxiety UK to offer support and advice to those experiencing anxiety, stress or depression. This is available to all members across the world and we would encourage you to promote it to members.

We also have a COVID support fund for those members who wish to progress and upgrade their membership but are facing financial difficulties. We work from the principle that money should be no barrier to development and progression. This is open to academic and industry members wishing to upgrade from Chartered Member (MCIOB) to Chartered Fellow (FCIOB) or Associated (ACIOB) and Incorporated (ICIOB) members wishing to upgrade to Chartered Member (MCIOB). Read more about it here.

These are just some of the initiatives that we have launched in response to the pandemic to support all our members, from students to fellows. If you think there is anything more we can do to support you and your students, we’d love to hear from you.

Stay safe all and I hope to see you and your students at the Student Festival.
