How we’re Supporting the Academics of our Industry

The academic community is very important to us at the CIOB. Academics are responsible for educating the next generation of construction management professionals, and since 1834, developing professionals who can challenge the industry has been at the very centre of what we do.

The academic community is very important to us at the CIOB. Academics are responsible for educating the next generation of construction management professionals, and since 1834, developing professionals who can challenge the industry has been at the very centre of what we do.

The Hackitt Review has shown that part of the problem in the industry is an acceptance of low standards and a fear of speaking out. Higher education plays a vital role in developing ethical practitioners that call out poor practice. This goes to the core of the CIOB vision to improve the quality of life for the users and creators of our built environment. We also have a Royal Charter that commits us to advance the science and practice of building for the public benefit.

We have recently strengthened our commitment to work closely with educators and in 2019 our Board of Trustees agreed a special package for those working in education. This includes a bespoke professional review for those working in education that reflects the variety of roles as well as affordable subscription fees. Becoming a Chartered Member of the CIOB demonstrates that you are engaged in current industry best practice and will help you improve the employability of your learners and graduates. It also gives you access to high quality CPD content and wider networking opportunities, as well as demonstrating your own commitment to ethical practice.

The Building Safety Bill, scheduled to be enacted into law in 2021, will have far reaching implications for both the industry and education. It’s imperative that education providers engage with professional bodies to ensure a safer, more inclusive and comfortable built environment for all.

We are pleased to announce that the CIOB is applying to become an End Point Assessor Organisation (EPAO) for a number of degree apprenticeships, including Construction Site Management, Design and Construction Management and Quantity Surveying. We worked in partnership with Local Authority Building Control to develop the degree apprenticeship in Building Control Surveying. We are keen to support vocational routes into higher education and to support universities in their delivery of these programmes.

Our strategic plans include expanding our education expertise to an international audience. This will take place over a number of years, starting in 2021 and our new officers will be responsible for engaging with your education establishments and improving the student and graduate experience.

Most all we would love to hear from you, to support you and help you and your learners, so please get in contact and tell us about your needs.
