As one of the few learned societies in the built environment, CIOB promotes educational initiatives to advance the skills and knowledge of construction professionals around the world.

Learned societies are dedicated to advancing knowledge in a specific field through research, publications and professional discourse. We are obliged by our Royal Charter to promote the science and practice of building and construction for the public benefit, and to improve public understanding by promoting and publishing research.

While we collaborate closely with other institutes within the built environment including The Institution of Civil Engineers (ICE), The Landscape Institute (LI), The Royal Institute of British Architects (RIBA), The Royal Institution of Chartered Surveyors (RICS), and The Royal Town Planning Institute (RTPI), CIOB offers a unique combination of learning and development opportunities.

As an End-Point Assessment Organisation (EPAO), we are supporting 1,300 apprentices through their assessments in 2025. We are listed on the Apprenticeship Provider and Assessment Register (APAR), which lists training provider organisations who are eligible for government funding to train apprentices.

We are also an awarding organisation, offering 15 qualifications across the UK and the Republic of Ireland. Each year, we award over 1000 vocational qualifications in fire and building safety, site construction, and building control, while also accrediting institutions worldwide, a quality mark for educational excellence.

Our Continuous Professional Development (CPD) portal hosts more than 300 resources helping construction professionals enhance their skills, knowledge and ethical standards, while our free CIOB Academy Massive Open Online Courses (MOOCs) have reached more than 30,000 learners in more than 100 countries.

We regularly publish Codes of Practice, guides, and technical information sheets to meet the needs of industry, and our scholarship programmes and awards support innovation, development, and education within the industry.

We also promote learning and development internationally through partnerships and agreements, such as the Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) we signed in April with the Council of Registered Builders of Nigeria (CORBON), providing a platform for knowledge exchange and better mutual understanding of both operating climes, and access to CIOB’s vast network of knowledge and training resources.
