Mike is a Fellow of the Chartered Institute of Building and the Chartered Management Institute. He also has an MBA from the Open University and a Non-Executive Director’s Diploma from the Financial Times. He was awarded an OBE for ‘Services to Education’ in the 2017 New Years Honours List.

He has been a member of CIOB for many years, initially serving on regional committees before becoming a Trustee, serving on various committees/boards prior to becoming Vice President and then President. He represented CIOB on the Competence Steering Group - Working Group 11 developing a procurement competence framework which was part of the ‘Building a Safer Future’ report following Grenfell and was CIOB’s representative on the Scottish Building Standards Futures Board.

Mike has over 40 years’ experience in the construction industry, mainly client-side, where he has experience of working with a range of contractors and consultants.

He was Chief Officer of three different departments within a large Local Authority, prior to becoming its Assistant Chief Executive. He spent ten years with the Department of Education fulfilling a number of roles which included leading the multi-disciplinary team responsible for the development and delivery of schools in the West Midlands and North West of England.

Mike has long believed in the fundamental importance of clients to the success of construction projects and chose clients as a core focus during his presidency. He is Chair of the CIOB’s Client Steering Group (CSG) which oversees the development and implementation of the institute’s long term Client Strategy.

Mike is also Director of Fordhall Community Land Initiative – Shropshire.
