Apprenticeship Training

Raising standards in the industry for more than 180 years.

CIOB is registered through the Apprenticeship Provider and Assessment Register (APAR) as an Apprenticeship Training Provider in England.

We offer an integrated learning experience through CIOB Academy that covers both delivery and assessment while also supporting progression to CIOB membership.

As the professional body for construction and the built environment, we’ve been setting standards for our industry since 1834. CIOB Academy has sector specific capability, insight and expertise. Our programmes match organisational and market needs, using industry-specific trainers, curriculum experts and leading-edge technology.

Successful skills training programmes are built on strong partnerships. Whether you’re setting up an apprenticeship scheme for the first time or exploring new opportunities, we have a dedicated team that will get to know your business, its culture, and where you want to go. That way, we can shape a robust strategy, manage the launch, and measure your programme’s impact as it evolves.

The apprenticeship process

Our CIOB Apprentices and their employers have access to the EOS Apprenticeship Management System, a one-stop shop where learners can access course content, e-learning support modules, and contact CIOB Support Staff and Learning Coaches.

Through a robust recruitment and onboarding process managed entirely through the EOS platform, the apprentice’s prior experience is mapped, and their aspirations, career goals, and job roles are matched to the most relevant apprenticeship standard. Their English and Maths levels are also identified, and learners are put through skills scans and learning styles to identify any relevant prior learning and development needs.

A formal induction takes place for every apprentice, including an initial advice and guidance session surrounding the standard with the employer, apprentice and Learning Coach. Training is also provided on how to use the EOS system.

Classes are online, while various methods of assessment including questioning, quizzes, class exercises, learning coach observations, written assignments, worksheets, and mock Apprenticeship assessments are used to ensure apprenticeship portfolios are aligned to the Knowledge, Skills and Behaviours (KSBs) of the occupational standard.

Employers have access to EOS Learner Progress Dashboards, giving real time updates on their apprentice’s progression. In conjunction with regular review meetings, this ensures that employers are always aware and involved with learner development.

Apprenticeship standards

Apprenticeship standards focus on learning, putting employers in the driving seat by allowing them to map out a clear career path for an apprentice, all based on the Knowledge, Skills and Behaviours (KSBs) required for them to competently do their job.

Apprenticeship standards mandate a 20% off-the-job training requirement, which is fully delivered by the CIOB Academy. We work with employers to design a learning journey specific to activities that take place inside and outside of the apprentice’s time spent working on the job.

End Point Assessment

The End-Point Assessment (EPA) is the final and most significant stage of an apprenticeship. It’s an unbiased, independently delivered assessment that establishes whether an apprentice is competent against the knowledge, skills and behaviours outlined in the apprenticeship standard.

We schedule EPA preparation sessions throughout the apprenticeship, with a full mock EPA as the apprentice nears the end of their apprenticeship.

In 2026, the EPAs will be replaced with Apprenticeship Assessments, which where appropriate can take place throughout the duration of the Apprenticeship. The EPAO will also become known simply as an Assessment Organisation, will continue to shape the assessment and ensure the validity of outcomes.

Professional body membership

Apprentices with CIOB Academy also receive free CIOB Student Membership, giving them access to a wealth of benefits that will support their career and learning journey.

On successful completion of the apprenticeship, they also qualify for CIOB Professional Body membership, and will be invited to attend a free graduation ceremony.
