What is your current role?
I currently work as an Assistant Project Manager for Demolition Company Colemans.
What does a typical day look like for you?
I attend to unread emails and messages for updates from the team, clients and our subcontractors. I review project schedule and update my task list and action items for the day. I document progress of work from site activities and communicate updates or issues to the Project Manager. Also, I sit in scheduled calls and meetings with clients or design coordination sessions.
Did you have any preconceptions about the construction industry prior to working in it? If so, how have those changed?
I initially perceived the construction industry to be predominantly male. During the early stage of my career, encountering female construction professionals was quite rare. However, this dynamic has significantly evolved; many women now occupy senior roles within the industry. Additionally, younger women are increasingly pursuing careers in construction through STEM education.
What were your favourite subjects at school?
My favourite subjects in school were physics, biology and technical drawings.
There are lots of different roles in the industry, how did you find the right role for you?
I was always fascinated about high rise buildings and would always wonder how they were designed and constructed, and how I could be involved in this process. That way I was privileged to seek counsel from my tutors in secondary school, and I learnt I had to be successful in the science subjects. I was determined to succeed in my science courses so I could see myself graduate and study Civil Engineering in the University.
What career advice would you give to your younger self?
Reflecting on my career journey, I would advise my younger self to embrace the value of persistence and curiosity. It’s essential to explore opportunities, keep learning, and remain adaptable. Gaining a strong foundation in science subjects, cultivating problem-solving skills, and seeking mentorship from industry professionals can open doors to exciting roles in construction. Most importantly, I would remind myself to maintain a long-term vision while celebrating incremental progress in personal and professional development.
Where would you like your career to take you?
Over the years, I have accumulated extensive knowledge that has enabled me to perform my role effectively. Familiarity with UK construction regulations, such as Construction Design and Management and the Code of Construction Practice, has enhanced my technical skills.
Additionally, a thorough understanding of site-based processes and procedures for health, safety, quality, and environmental management, coupled with staying abreast of construction methodologies and innovations, has proven advantageous.
The greatest satisfaction in my career comes from the legacy left behind. Witnessing the tangible benefits of projects I have been involved with brings me immense pride.
My short-term goal is to further develop my management skills. In the long term, I aim to transition into a Senior Construction Management role, focusing on Project Management, and eventually become a Contracts Director.
