The CIOB Building Conservation Certification Scheme, launched in 2017, as a response to the growing demand for ‘certified’ conservation specialists, is a validation of your knowledge and competence in the treatment of historic buildings and structures.

The CIOB Building Conservation Certification Scheme recognises individuals working in building conservation across three levels of competence:

  • Certified: The highest level of competence, acknowledging advanced expertise.
  • Proficient: Acknowledges competence at a level below Certified.
  • Registered: Practitioners listed within the scheme but not yet Certified.

Each level highlights the individual’s practical expertise and their role in the industry.

Overview

The Scheme is open to those who hold at least HNC/HND in Conservation and have typically 3 years of relevant experience working in the following roles: Work supervisors, site managers,
design coordinators/managers, project or construction managers, facilities or estates managers.

Candidates will be required to demonstrate competence against the ICOMOS (International Council on Monuments and Sites) Training and Education Guidelines, based on experience and qualifications. In addition, the Scheme requires a demonstration of competence towards sustainability and energy efficiency issues.
