Summary
Join us for a follow up site visit to see the progression of the seafront arches restoration. Please note: this event is for over 18’s only.
Madeira Terrace is a Grade 2* listed 865-metre-long stretch of seafront arches and promenade on Madeira Drive in Brighton. Mackley has been appointed by Brighton & Hove City Council to undertake the first phase of the restoration.
The project includes the refurbishment of 28 of the arches between the Royal Crescent steps and Shelter Hall / Concorde 2, which have been inaccessible to the public for a number of years due to their condition. Works include dismantling all cast-iron elements for shot blasting and repairs, followed by painting and reassembly. There will also be work on the promenade, with a full replacement of the upper deck that incorporates lighting and infrastructure for future activity and events, alongside the installation of a new lift to provide full accessibility.
During this second CIOB visit, visitors will be able to see how the project has progressed from the initial dismantling phase to the early stages of reconstruction. There will be opportunity to observe the installation of the restored cast-iron arches, with an explanation of the cast iron repair process , the fixing methodology and the engineering challenges faced by the team as they balance Victorian designs with modern standards. There will also be opportunity to look at the new lift shaft and brickwork as the team prepare a new access route from the upper deck down to the seafront.
