About Sha Tin Sewage Treatment Works:
The Sha Tin Sewage Treatment Works (STSTW) is the largest secondary sewage treatment facility in Hong Kong, covering 28 hectares and serving a population of 650,000 in the Sha Tin and Ma On Shan districts. Commissioned in 1982, it has undergone several capacity upgrades, currently treating up to 340,000 cubic meters of sewage daily.
The facility incorporates advanced technologies, including nutrient removal and ultraviolet disinfection systems, to improve effluent quality. It also features an Information Centre to educate the public on sewage treatment processes and environmental awareness. Plans are underway to relocate the facility to caverns for sustainable development, with completion targeted by 2031.
