Summary

EGL1 is a two-gigawatt high voltage direct current electrical connection to be built between Torness in East Lothian, Scotland and Hawthorn

Eastern Green Link 1 (EGL1) is the first of a series of five planned cable connections linking transmission sites on the electricity network in Scotland with those in England.

The wider project consists of a convertor station in East Lothian at Torness linked via a subsea cable to a convertor station and new substation in County Durham at Seaham.

The substation in England is being constructed by Murphy Energy.

The Project Director for the substation, Doug Gray who is a Member of CIOB will give a presentation of the project and some of the challenges to date in building this infrastructure.

The talk will include content on the interface difficulties between the three different contractors on the project (cable, convertors and substations), some of the technological challenges linked to the new substation and it’s carbon footprint, and also the site difficulties related to the former colliery location.

The virtual session will be followed by a full site visit in summer 2026 and hopefully a follow up at the end of construction.

Following registration you shall receive an email containing the relevant joining details for the webinar.
