Summary

Explore EPCs, retrofit and heritage buildings in this webinar, with expert insight on fabric-first approaches and balancing decarbonisation

Please note: this event is for over 18’s only.

Join us for this panel event hosted by Amanda Williams CIOB Head of Environmental Sustainability, bringing together expert perspectives on the challenges and opportunities of improving energy efficiency in heritage and listed buildings. The panel will include Dean Calcutt, with additional speakers to be confirmed.

As the drive toward decarbonisation accelerates, professionals working with historic buildings face increasing pressure to meet energy efficiency targets while respecting heritage significance. This session will explore how these sometimes‑competing priorities can be navigated in a practical, proportionate, and compliant way.

The discussion will examine current and proposed EPC requirements in England, highlighting why standard EPC methodologies often fail to adequately reflect the performance and constraints of traditional construction. Panel members will consider fabric‑first retrofit approaches and discuss how sensitive interventions can improve building performance without undermining historic character. Attendees will leave with a clearer understanding of how to make informed, defensible decisions when working with heritage assets.

You’ll learn how to:

  • Understand current EPC requirements in England and the direction of proposed regulatory changes
  • Recognise the limitations of standard EPC assessment methods when applied to listed and heritage buildings
  • Apply fabric‑first retrofit principles in the context of traditional materials and construction techniques
  • Identify appropriate, proportionate, and sensitive energy efficiency measures for listed buildings
  • Balance decarbonisation targets with conservation obligations and statutory consent requirements

This event is ideal for construction professionals, surveyors, conservation specialists, clients, and anyone involved in the management or retrofit of heritage buildings who wants to develop practical, informed approaches to energy efficiency.
