Summary
The aim of the talk is to advocate for safer outdoor and indoor air quality as a critical accessibility and awareness issueRespirable Crystalline Silica (RCS) is one of the most common naturally occurring elements on the planet. Found in the earth’s crust, crystalline silica is a key component of sand, granite and other naturally occurring minerals.
Numerous public health, governmental and industry organisations are reporting an urgent need to focus on silica dust exposure, remarking it is quickly emerging as a global crisis
The aim of the talk is to advocate for safer outdoor and indoor air quality as a critical accessibility and awareness issue when undertaking construction works (i.e. Repair, Maintenance, Retrofitting) either commercially or professionally or at home.
As everyone should be able to breathe safely without risking poor health outcomes. In doing so, we can create healthier, more accessible, and informed communities for all.
The talk will take you through the dangers of RCS, the subsequent health and wellbeing, economic and environmental impacts (direct and indirect), what the law says, how you can reduce exposure, types of respiratory protective equipment (RPE) to consider and a brief insight into our funded CIOB research project which explored silica dust exposure attitudes, perceptions, and practices.
