Equality, Diversity & Inclusion (EDI)

What It Means for CIOB and the Built Environment

At CIOB, we believe a diverse and inclusive construction industry is not only ethical, it’s essential for innovation, resilience, and meeting skills shortages.

Why EDI Matters

The construction industry is full of talent, yet it does not always reflect the communities it serves.

By changing this, we can:

Our EDI Action Plan

CIOB has a clear EDI Action Plan (2023–2028) which sets out how we will make a difference across the organisation and the wider sector. Our focus areas include:

  • Leadership – ensuring our leaders actively champion EDI.

  • Events and Marketing – making sure every CIOB activity is inclusive.

  • Employers and Procurement – promoting fair practices across the supply chain.

  • Membership – supporting members from all backgrounds.

  • Education and Careers – making pathways into the industry accessible.

  • Policy and Influence – embedding EDI into our work with government and industry.

EDI Annual Report

Our Annual EDI Report allows us to track the progress we’re making on our EDI journey and to highlight our sincere commitment to EDI by being transparent about the work we’re doing and what we have yet to do.

Promote 'Need To Talk' Initiative

The Need to Talk sticker initiative is a discreet way for people in construction to access support when they need it most. Each sticker includes a QR code that links directly to CIOB Assist, giving quick and confidential access to help and resources.

Step 1: Visit our Need to Talk Sticker page.

Step 2: Download our stickers for your workplace.

Step 3: Place them in discreet locations e.g. toilets, lockers.

Read the CIOB President's blog on breaking the silence around mental health in construction.

Become an EDI Ambassador

A CIOB EDI Ambassador is someone who actively promotes equality, diversity and inclusion within their workplace or community. They raise awareness, encourage positive behaviours, support colleagues, and help turn organisational commitments into everyday action, making EDI visible and meaningful in practice.

Step 1: read the role profile to see if this is right for you.

Step 2: agree with your local Hub or regional committee that you will act as its sole EDI Ambassador.

Step 3: inform the EDI team.

Sign our Diversity & Inclusion Charter

Cross-sector EDI partnership

In mid-2022, six leading professional membership bodies from across the built environment sector launched a 45-point action plan to jointly promote equity, diversity and inclusion (EDI).

This includes:

  • The Chartered Institute of Building (CIOB)
  • The Institution of Civil Engineers (ICE)
  • The Landscape Institute (LI)
  • The Royal Institute of British Architects (RIBA)
  • The Royal Institution of Chartered Surveyors (RICS)
  • The Royal Town Planning Institute (RTPI)

The action plan details clear outcomes, target deadlines over three years, required resources, and responsibilities, enabling the organisations to clearly track progress and accountability.
