Completing your Professional Review is the final steps to becoming a Chartered Member of CIOB (MCIOB). While some candidates are confident preparing their application independently, others may feel unsure about where to start, how to structure their submission, or whether their experience meets the required standard. To ease this process, CIOB proves a range of additional support to help guide applicants through the process.

Two common sources of support are CIOB Mentoring and Professional Review Support Providers. Although both are designed to help applicants succeed, they offer different types of guidance and support.

Structured support and specialist guidance

Professional Review Support Providers are trusted organisations with experience supporting candidates through the application process. Their services are designed to help applicants prepare stronger submissions through structured guidance, workshops, feedback, and ongoing support.

For candidates who lack confidence in professional writing, struggle with time management, or would benefit from a more organised framework, this type of support can provide additional clarity and reassurance.

One of the main distinctions between mentoring and Support Providers is the level of detailed feedback available. Providers may review draft applications, identify areas for improvement, and help candidates strengthen the quality and clarity of their submission before it is formally submitted.

Professional Review Support Providers charge an additional fee for their services, separate from the standard CIOB membership and Professional Review costs.

Learning from someone who has completed the process

For applicants seeking more informal support, CIOB mentoring offers applicants the opportunity to connect with experienced construction professionals who have already completed their own Professional Review and achieved Chartered status.

One of the key benefits of mentoring is the personal insight that mentors provide, having gone through the process themselves. Mentors understand the challenges applicants often face and can offer practical guidance based on first-hand experience.

Mentoring relationships are typically informal and flexible. Conversations are often arranged around the availability of both mentor and mentee, fitting around professional and personal commitments. This can make mentoring particularly appealing to candidates balancing busy workloads or irregular schedules.

Mentoring is also provided free of charge, which may make it a more accessible way to gain support, encouragement, and accountability.

Deciding which route is right for you

The right form of support will vary from candidate to candidate. Some applicants may preferer ongoing reassurance and guidance from someone who has already completed the process. Others may prefer a more formal support structure with workshops, coaching, and detailed feedback.

Candidates who are confident writers, comfortable working independently, and mainly looking for encouragement may find mentoring provides the right level of support. The flexibility and peer-to-peer nature of mentoring can make it particularly valuable for applicants seeking practical insight from an experienced professional.

By contrast, candidates who feel uncertain about interpreting the requirements, structuring their application, or managing the process alongside other commitments may benefit from the additional structure offered by a Professional Review Support Provider.

Whichever route you choose, seeking support early in your Professional Review journey can make a significant difference, ensuring you have the time to reflect on your experience, prepare evidence, and complete a strong submission.
