Peggy Havor: Fleet and Asset Manager

Management and Business degree

Last updated: 26th May 2026

What qualification did you do?

I completed a degree in Management and Business Entrepreneurship at the University of Northampton, where I developed a strong foundation in business principles, communication, and problem‑solving.

Why did you transition into construction?

Although my academic background wasn’t directly related to construction, I was drawn to the challenge and the opportunity to step outside my comfort zone. At the time, I didn’t fully understand what I was signing up for, but that uncertainty motivated me. The prospect of learning something new and developing within a fast‑paced, demanding industry was particularly appealing.

What were the main challenges to entering construction industry?

The main challenge was my initial lack of industry knowledge, particularly coming from a non‑construction background. I overcame this by maintaining an open mindset and a strong willingness to learn. I consistently asked questions, sought clarification, and took time to understand how the industry operates.

A principle that stayed with me throughout was that “no question is a silly question”, which helped me build both confidence and capability over time.

Which skills from your degree have proven most valuable?

Communication has proven to be the most valuable skill from my degree, particularly in helping me adapt quickly and build effective working relationships. As I progressed into my second role as a Resolver Officer, I was also able to apply and further develop skills such as problem‑solving, decision‑making, and critical thinking, especially when managing and resolving complaints.

What factors contributed most to your progress?

When I first entered the industry, my employer supported my development by providing a hands‑on learning environment and encouraging me to ask questions and build my knowledge from the ground up. My colleagues also played a significant role in my development, offering guidance, sharing experience, and supporting my learning, which greatly contributed to my progress.

What advice would you offer to fellow graduates?

My advice would be to remain open‑minded and embrace every learning opportunity, even if your career path does not feel clear from the outset. Construction does not always follow a conventional or linear route, and my own experience reflects that. I completed my degree in Management and Business Entrepreneurship and joined MA Group, which is not a traditional construction company and demonstrates how routes into the industry can be unconventional and diverse.

I have now been with MA Group for 4 years, during which time I have progressed through a variety of roles. I joined initially as a Claims Handler, was promoted to Resolver Officer (regulated complaint handler), and am currently seconded into a new role as Fleet and Asset Manager. This journey has allowed me to gain a broad spectrum of skills and knowledge, providing insight into the operational, regulatory, and commercial elements that make any construction company function effectively.

As a forward‑thinking organisation, MA Group places strong emphasis on development, adaptability, and progression. The experience I have gained so far has given me a strong foundation and transferable skills that have set me up well for my continued career journey within the construction industry.
