Back in 2005, the CIOB supported the then British Institute of Architectural Technologists as we sought a Royal Charter to become the CIAT you might know today. Achieving chartership was an important step to gain the recognition the discipline of architectural technology deserves and places CIAT members on an even footing with other Chartered professions. Since then, we have worked closely with the CIOB to share knowledge, news and expertise across the professions.

We have a 'dual membership agreement' which means CIOB members can become Associate members or affiliates of CIAT. This depends on a few factors like academic, employment and/or professional qualification status. That agreement works both ways with CIAT members able to join the CIOB community too. If you are a CIOB member reading this just contact us on [email protected] for further guidance. There is even a 25% discount on the CIAT subscription for CIOB members.

If you have not heard of us, we are the global membership qualifying body for Architectural Technology. We exist as a not-for-profit organisation and we lead and promote the discipline of architectural technology, setting and maintaining standards for education, practice and professionalism. The CIOB and CIAT share many of the same values. We are the only international body able to award the regulated and protected qualification, ‘Chartered Architectural Technologist’. This status reflects the prestigious and independent character of the Institute and recognises the distinct nature of the Architectural Technology discipline. We accredit undergraduate and postgraduate degree level programmes, although we are do not develop curricula or offer academic qualification, such as degrees we do work in partnership with those who do.

You may be wondering what is a Chartered Architectural Technologist is – they are qualified to offer design services and manage projects from inception to completion. An architectural technologist often leads the technological design of a project, forming the link between concept, innovation and realisation.
