Summary

This landmark project forms a key part of the city’s wider regeneration and will provide a major government hub in the neart of Newcastle.

Join the Chartered Institute of Building (CIOB) for an exclusive site visit to Bowmer & Kirkland’s Pilgrim’s Place development in central Newcastle, the new Department for Work and Pensions (DWP) headquarters. This landmark project forms a key part of the city’s wider regeneration and will provide a major government hub, bringing thousands of civil service roles into the heart of Newcastle.

Pilgrim Place, located within Newcastle upon Tyne City centre, comprises of two Grade A office blocks known presently as Pilgrim Place 1 and Pilgrim Place 2. One of the buildings will be tenanted by DWP and the other will be available to leases on a floor by floor basis. PP1 will be a 9-storey building and PP2 will be tiered block of 7 storey and 3 storey sections. Below ground level/street level the buildings will have two basement levels. Both buildings will be adjoined by a central courtyard/public realm space. Basement levels B2 & B1 up to level 00 will consist of a reinforced in-situ concrete frame incorporating four lift and stair cores. From level 00, the construction will change to a steel frame structure incorporating suspended reinforced concrete floors on metal decking. PP1’s façade will be constructed of mainly glass curtain walling whereas PP2’s façade will be mainly of facing brickwork.

During the visit, attendees will gain insight into the scale and scope of the development, including the challenges of constructing a major government office building on a constrained urban site. The project team will share their experience of programme delivery, logistics management, coordination of multiple trades, and maintaining high standards of health, safety, and environmental performance throughout the build.

This visit offers an excellent opportunity for CIOB members, construction professionals, and students to experience a significant live project, engage with the delivery team, and deepen their understanding of real-world construction practices on a flagship public sector development.
