You might not know, I certainly didn’t until today, that the CIOB Benevolent Fund provides a service of practical advice, information and financial assistance for Members who fall upon hard times. It was established in 1992 and has helped many members since then get back on their feet and offered support for their families too.
My first observations are ‘wow’, what an amazing organisation the CIOB is; the values and ethics the institute upholds, the rigour of the professional membership process, the commitment of office bearers, Trustees and active hub Members across the globe. This is an organisation with real purpose that does affect and will continue to affect the lives of every person who lives and works within a built environment.
There are three steps in the process to becoming a CMYA finalist; first there is a paper sift of your submission, then a site visit where one of our judges will visit you at your project, and then the final step is the face to face interview. This process is one I’ve had the pleasure of being involved in for several years and I never fail to be impressed by the passion and the talent that we have in our industry. However, sitting down at a table in front of three judges and selling yourself isn’t an easy task, but it is what you need to do to be named the best Construction Manager in the UK.
Membership of the CIOB in the Middle East North Africa (MENA) region has an estimated 1,300 members, of which only 190 are female. The construction sector in the region has its challenges and, coupled with a transient workforce and unpredictable changes in the market, it is vital that our membership remains diverse and celebrates the pioneering women leading the way.
This year’s event, as ever, was a great opportunity for many of us to catch-up with CIOB delegates and members and for them to network and have those informal catch-ups that we don’t always get time to have. While it’s true that conversation was not just confined to construction industry matters - the prospect of a new PM is inevitably going to be talked about - there was a great deal of CIOB activity to discuss and a hugely positive feeling about the Institute’s plans.
I am honoured, privileged and humbled to be taking on the presidency of a great and proud institution, that is the CIOB. We’re living in a time of tremendous change, and construction is changing as well. There is much to be optimistic about but face it: these are stressful times.
Scotland has long been famed for its engineering and construction. From the Lighthouse Stevensons to James Craig, who planned the New Town of Edinburgh, right up to the Falkirk Wheel, the only fully rotating boat lift in the world, which was completed at the start of the 21st century.
To date, there has been a general reluctance from businesses to publicly report on any incidents of Modern Slavery they have discovered.
When I first got the word ‘quality’ in my job title, I was one of very few across the industry. Health and safety managers are seen as a necessary part of the sector, but quality didn’t come with the same level of respect and understanding on the site. But the role I, and thankfully now many others, have is a crucial part of the construction sector.
This event is a conversation we all own, we want to hear your views and opinions and tap into the expertise you have and, as with every Forum, the programme is packed with discussions around many serious issues affecting the construction industry.
On June 12 the Home Office brought together representatives from across the construction sector to have a frank and open conversation on how we can eradicate modern slavery from supply chains.
Every year around this time, I take a bit of time to reflect on what Armed Forces Day means to me. It’s amazing how a short time in the army, by military standards, has been both the catalyst and a stepping stone to what continues to be a rewarding career in the construction industry.
