Summary
This webinar will examine recent caselaw development in Singapore on extension of time and liquidated damagesThe speakers will consider the treatment of extension of time clauses in standard form contracts, consequences of non-compliance, and discuss the issue of when time for completion becomes at large and treatment of concurrent delays. In addition, the Singapore court has also considered recently the test for determining whether liquidated damages should be struck down as penalty clauses and if so , whether damages recoverable are limited by the amount of liquidated damages imposed.

CHIAM Yunxin

Yunxin has a broad range of advocacy experience and has acted as counsel in complex arbitration and litigation matters both domestically and internationally. She has also acted as lead counsel in numerous adjudications under the SOP Act. In the course of her work, Yunxin has handled a variety of high-quantum matters, involving issues about breaches of contract, variations, defects, delays, wrongful termination, calls on performance bonds etc. She has acted for and advised developers, contractors, and consultants in matters relating to residential buildings, office buildings, airport terminals, water reclamation plants, and Mass Rapid Transit projects.
Beyond practice, Yunxin serves on the Law Society’s Building and Construction Law Committee and is an Associate Lecturer at the Singapore University of Social Sciences. She teaches the Construction Law Module for the Bachelor of Building and Project Management course.
Deborah HOE

Deborah has represented clients in complex multimillion-dollar disputes both domestically and internationally, including claims on breaches of contract, delays, termination, defects, and loss of profits. She has acted in international and domestic arbitrations administered by ICC, SIAC, and SIA, and regularly acts as lead counsel in adjudications under the SOP Act for both claimants and respondents. She has appeared at all levels of the Singapore Courts and represented clients in multiple mediations conducted by the Singapore Mediation Centre.
Deborah graduated from Singapore Management University School of Law (LL. B, Magna Cum Laude (High Distinction)) in 2016 and was awarded the SMU Scholarship under the SMU Scholars’ Programme for the full duration of her course. She was placed on the SMU School of Law Dean’s List for outstanding academic performance and represented the school in local mooting competitions.
