Site Visit - Castle Leazes

Come along and join the CIOB North East, in partnership with the School of Architecture and the Built Environment, Northumbria University, for the ‘Constructing the North East’ monthly programme of site visits.

Visitors will be given a guided tour of the sites, meet the people delivering the projects, and see first-hand the huge range of roles that keep construction moving, from site managers and quantity surveyors to architects, engineers, digital construction specialists, design managers, health & safety leads, construction managers, social value managers, project managers and more. It's a chance to ask questions and get a genuine glimpse of what a career in construction actually looks and feels like.

Whether you're a student weighing up your options or simply curious about local projects, these visits are designed for you.

Bowmer & Kirkland's Castle Leazes site consists of two student accommodation blocks which will ultimately house 2011 students. Also within the building will be amenity areas on the ground floor which will include gym, laundry, cinema areas as well as break out areas.

Construction of the build is a steel frame with metal decking complete with concrete floors and 25 no. stair and lift cores. Pre-made bathroom pods will be used in the student bedrooms.

External fabric will be from the outset, structural steel frame complete with cementitious board, insulation then a mixture of render, brick slips and traditional brickwork -predominantly to the low level areas

Landscape areas will be formed with seating areas, minimal parking and a small number of electric charging points

The building completions are split into two with the smaller 800 bedroom block due for completion by the end of December 2027 and the larger 1200 block due to complete a year later. The project clients are Newcastle University & Unite Students in partnership.

FULL PPE MUST BE WORN - Hi-viz jacket, hard hat (preferably with chin strap), safety boots, gloves and glasses. Site can provide some, so please let me know if you require anything.

This learning activity can contribute to your annual CPD return and should be logged accordingly.
