Quality and Safety

Quality and safety are the foundations of a professional, trusted construction industry. Quality is about the greater public good we expect from our buildings to promote human health, safety, and wellbeing as well as addressing today’s many social, cultural, environmental and economic concerns.

Why is there such a challenge? 

Quality and safety have, in the past, been seen purely as a measure of regulatory compliance or a means to satisfying clients’ briefs. In the UK and globally, progress has been made, but there are still significant challenges across the industry, including: 

  • Cultural issues: In some parts of the industry, speed and cost are prioritised over quality and safety.
  • Regulatory complexity: Navigating evolving building regulations can be challenging for firms and professionals. Especially those small and medium-sized businesses that make up much of the construction industry.
  • Skills and competency gaps: Shortfalls in training and qualifications can lead to poor workmanship and unsafe environments.
  • Inconsistent standards: A lack of uniform quality and safety practices across projects and regions.

What is happening at a policy level?

The Grenfell Tower fire in June 2017 led to changes to the rules and processes governing building safety in the UK. But there are a variety of other areas of concern that the Government has sought to make changes and improvements to improve quality and safety. Some of these include:
