Environmental Sustainability
As a sector that shapes the world around us, construction has a vital role to play in building a more sustainable future. From how we design and deliver projects to the way we use materials and manage resources, there are real opportunities to reduce environmental impact. At CIOB, we’re committed to supporting a built environment that works in harmony with the planet.
The Challenges We Face
Environmental sustainability in construction is a complex issue shaped by:
Carbon emissions – Both operational and embodied carbon from buildings contribute significantly to climate change.
Resource use and waste – Construction and demolition account for over a third of global material consumption and waste generation.
Biodiversity and land use – Projects can disrupt local ecosystems and natural habitats without proper planning.
Climate resilience – Many existing buildings and infrastructure are not equipped to cope with extreme weather and rising temperatures.
What We're Doing
CIOB is helping lead the shift toward a more sustainable built environment through advocacy, partnerships and professional development. Key areas of focus include:
-
Supporting low-carbon constructionWe promote practices that reduce embodied and operational carbon in line with global climate targets.
-
Influencing policy and regulationWe work with governments and industry to ensure sustainability is embedded in construction policy.
-
Championing retrofit and reuseWe encourage the repurposing of existing buildings to reduce waste and support net-zero goals.
-
Raising professional standardsThrough training, guidance and CPD, we’re helping our members embed sustainability in everyday practice.
