Professional Review
The final stage to gaining Chartered Membership for most candidates is the Professional Review. The Professional Review assesses that you have the right knowledge, skills and experience in the three main areas of competence: occupational, management and professionalism.
Upon passing your assessment, you will become a Chartered Member and be entitled to use the designation MCIOB.
How to apply for the Professional Review
- Step 1: Academic requirements and experience requirements
You will need to have met the academic eligibility requirements, along with a minimum of 3 years of relevant experience (5 years if your qualification is not in the built environment or is a non-honours degree) before starting your application. You will need to hold a Level 6 (degree) level qualification or higher to be academically eligible.
- Step 2: Membership
You must already be a non-chartered member (Applicant) of the CIOB. If you aren't an Applicant member yet, you will need to register for an online account and then apply for membership. Start the process here.
- Step 3: Download the Professional Review form
See below for more information on which form to download.
- Guidance notes
You’ll need to read the guidance notes that you will receive with the application form, which will detail the supporting documents that you will be required to submit along with your application. For example, you may submit an up-to-date copy of your CV and a current record of your CPD.
- Verification
Your application will need to be endorsed by your line manager, a client or a construction professional who knows you well. You can find out more in the guidance notes you’ll receive with your application.
Which form is for you?
There are three Professional Review forms. The one you’ll need depends on your experience and qualifications. After you have joined the CIOB at Applicant grade, you can choose the form for you from the options on the right hand side of this page.
- Professional Review for those working in the industry
This is the most common Professional Review form, for all applicants except those with selected Level 7 NVQ Diplomas or those working in the academic field. If you're not sure if you need to complete the Professional Review, click here to find your route to Chartered membership. - NVQ Professional Review
This is a route with a much shorter form for those with NVQ 7 or SVQ 11. If you have a different NVQ or other qualification you’ll need to fill in the Industry route form. Please click here to read more about the eligibility for this route. - Professional Review for academics
This tailored route is suitable if you are a teacher, lecturer or researcher, and you do not have direct experience of working on site, or have not worked on site for a while. Read more here about the Academic route.
Please note: New application forms are now ready to download. Old application forms will be accepted until 31 December 2021.
