Who We Are
We are the Chartered Institute of Building, and we stand for the science, ethics and practice of built environments across the world. Everything we do is to improve the quality of life for those using and creating the built environment.
We have a role in the management, leadership, education and development of our industry. For our members, guiding and educating them as they embark on their careers. For policymakers, defining the standards for all to meet. For the public, creating an environment they can live and work in safely, comfortably and confidently.
Setting standards for our industry since 1834
From the first group of Master Builders coming together in 1834, to our board of trustees today, we’ve always set and upheld the standards for our industry to meet. From the Houses of Parliament in London to the Petronas Towers in Kuala Lumpur. For the safety of construction workers, working at 1,200 feet off the ground. For the families living in their first home. For governments planning the future of their cities.
Creating the experts for the future
Using both the cutting edge of technology and the foundation of hard-earned experience, we train the construction experts of the future. Royal Charter
The CIOB Royal Charter, granted in 1980, outlines the objectives which form the foundations of our work, our role and sets the standards to which members are committed.
Who are our Members?
Our members past and present have been responsible for many ground-breaking projects across the world. We have the most diverse membership of any professional body in the built environment. Our members work in disciplines that cover the entire lifecycle of a built asset and even in the education and development of the next generation of professionals.
Chartered members are construction professionals with a common commitment to achieve and maintain the highest possible standards. Chartered Member status, and the designations MCIOB and FCIOB, are recognised and respected internationally as the mark of true construction professionalism.
